Breaking Barriers: New Initiative to End Discrimination on Set

Posted: 9 Aug 2024

Garden Studios is thrilled to announce the launch of a ground-breaking campaign to address a long-standing issue in the film and TV industry. The PMA Diverse Squad, Time’s Up UK, and The British Blacklist, have joined forces to ensure that the hair and makeup experience on set is professional, fair, and equal for black and global majority actors.

A Step Towards Equality:

In Cannes, prominent British talents including Fola Evans-Akingbola, Lashana Lynch, Naomie Harris, and Jordan Pitt supported this vital initiative. The campaign introduces a new clause to actors’ deal memos mandating a hair and makeup consultation and ensuring that artists assigned have the expertise to cater to diverse hair textures and skin tones.

Discrimination based on hair style or texture has alienated and harmed Black and global majority actors. This new clause is the beginning of our work to ensure inclusivity in hair and makeup services on set.

Lashana Lynch added “Black artists often lack the same support in hair and makeup as their peers. This campaign aims to share that load, creating an equitable work environment on and off set.”

“No actor should worry about their hair when preparing for a role” said Naomie Harris. “This campaign addresses the persistent issue of hair and makeup discrimination, ensuring everyone gets the professional support they need.”

Jordan Pitt, Co-Director, Untold Stories: Hair on Set “It’s outrageous that such issues persist in 2024. Our documentary highlights this discrimination, and I’m proud to support this campaign for change.”

Akua Gyamfi, Founder, The British Blacklist: "As a former hairdresser and now founder of The British Blacklist, I know first-hand the importance of having knowledgeable hair and makeup artists on set. I'm fully behind this campaign."
Ade Rawcliffe, Board Director, Time’s Up UK: "For too long, we've not advocated enough for inclusivity in our workspaces. We look forward to working with industry partners to make the industry inclusive for all talent."
Join us in supporting this essential movement to create a fair and equal environment for all actors on set. Let's ensure everyone feels valued and represented.
