Garden Studios Celebrates S.O.U.L. Film Fest as 2024 Sponsors

Posted: 4 Sep 2024

Garden Studios was thrilled to sponsor S.O.U.L. Fest last weekend, the UK’s leading Black film festival. We were honoured to support an event that provides a vital platform for Black filmmakers and film audiences to come together. It was truly a fantastic weekend, filled with inspiring films, impactful conversations, and a strong sense of community.

A Brief History of S.O.U.L. Fest

Founded in 2019, S.O.U.L. Fest was established as a collaboration between three organisations dedicated to serving Black audiences and talent. The British Blacklist is a media platform that celebrates the work of UK-based Black creatives, as well as those from the wider Diaspora, across various mediums including Screen, Stage, Literature, and Sound. We Are Parable is known for their expertise in film exhibition and their belief in the power of storytelling to enhance the cinematic experience. S.O.U.L. Film aims to make the British film and TV industry more diverse by celebrating and connecting BAME filmmakers and audiences.

A Weekend of Celebration and Recognition

Hosted at the iconic BFI Southbank, S.O.U.L. Fest spanned four days and featured a stellar lineup of award-winning talent on-screen. Renowned actors such as Lennie James, Ariyon Bakare, and Colman Domingo were among the celebrated talent, making the event a true showcase of Black excellence in film. The festival not only provided a platform for emerging filmmakers but also honored those who have made significant contributions to Black British screen culture.

One of the festival’s key highlights was the 2024 S.O.U.L. Fest Awards, which recognised outstanding contributions to the industry. This year, the prestigious Impact Award was presented to Jimmy Akingbola, in recognition of his remarkable work on screen in both TV and film. His achievements are a testament to the talent and dedication within the Black filmmaking community, and his recognition serves as an inspiration to aspiring filmmakers.

The festival featured not only screenings but also panel discussions, Q&A sessions, and networking opportunities that allowed attendees to engage directly with industry professionals. These events fostered important conversations about representation, diversity, and the future of Black cinema in the UK.

At Garden Studios, we are committed to promoting diversity and inclusion within the film industry. By supporting S.O.U.L. Fest, we are helping to amplify the voices of Black filmmakers and contribute to a more inclusive industry. We believe that festivals like S.O.U.L. Fest are crucial in creating opportunities for underrepresented talent and in bringing diverse stories to the forefront.

As we look to the future, we are excited to continue supporting initiatives that celebrate diversity in film. We are proud to be a part of S.O.U.L. Fest and look forward to seeing the festival grow and evolve, providing even more opportunities for Black filmmakers and audiences. Together, we can create a film industry that truly represents the richness and diversity of our society.
