Our first *nearly* zero waste production
Witches – a documentary released exclusively on MUBI on 22 November 2024 – was filmed at Garden Studios in March 2023.
The production marked our first client to achieve nearly 100% reuse of all set materials and props. This milestone was made possible through early collaboration with the production team, particularly the set designer.
How we did it:
At the project’s outset, we implemented a shared, live Google document where the team catalogued all set materials and props available for donation post-production. This resource, complete with photos and measurements, was updated continuously throughout the process.
Garden Studios leveraged our extensive network of local charities, organisations, and schools to identify donation recipients and coordinated a schedule of pickups on the strike day.
- Textiles were donated to Brent Start Hillside Adult Education Center
- Wood materials were repurposed by Republic of Park Royal, a local artist community that transformed the flats into studio spaces
- Props were gifted to a local prop store
- Set design materials went to a nearby film school
- Various bedding items were donated to a homeless charity
- Other reusable items found new homes through the Olio app
Lessons learned:
While adopting circular practices requires some initial planning, it is far less time-consuming than many productions anticipate, and the social and environmental benefits are substantial. Notably, Witches achieved zero waste skips, demonstrating that sustainable practices can also lead to significant cost savings.
The film is available exclusively on MUBI on the 22nd of November. You can watch the trailer here.
