The Future of Food Waste Management: What You Need to Know

Posted: 17 Feb 2025

At Garden Studios, we understand that while most productions strive to minimise food waste, some level of surplus is often unavoidable. The good news is that sustainable solutions are available—and soon they’ll become mandatory.

Starting from March 25, 2025, a new legal requirement will come into effect mandating companies to dispose of food waste in dedicated food waste bins. This shift represents a significant step toward sustainable waste management, reducing landfill use, and promoting resource recovery.

Why Food Donation Matters

When possible, donating excess food is always the most responsible and sustainable option. Food donations help reduce environmental impact while supporting communities in need. However, we recognise that there are situations when donation isn’t feasible. In these cases, proper food waste disposal becomes essential.

Partnering with ReFood for Sustainable Waste Disposal

At Garden Studios, we’ve partnered with ReFood for our food waste management needs. ReFood specialises in anaerobic digestion—a remarkable process where bacteria break down food waste in the absence of oxygen. This process offers several benefits:

  • Biogas Production: The biogas generated can be used as a renewable energy source and is fed directly into the National Gas Grid.
  • Digestate Creation: The solid and liquid by-products (digestate) can be repurposed as fertilisers, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices.

How You Can Help:

We’ve made it easy for everyone at Garden Studios to play a role in responsible waste disposal:

  • Office Food Waste: Dedicated food waste bins are available in kitchens across campus for day-to-day office waste.
  • Catering Operations: For larger volumes of food waste generated by catering services, our Client Services Team is ready to assist. Simply reach out, and we’ll help ensure the waste is managed efficiently.

This new legal requirement isn’t just about complianceit’s about fostering a culture of sustainability. By embracing specialised food waste collection and working with partners like ReFood, we’re contributing to a cleaner, greener future.
